Playground picks

Do you remember when you were young and were in a group and the group needed to divide into two teams?  How did it go?  Two people would be captains and one would go first and then the other and the picks would go back and forth until finally the last two people were left.  And the person whose turn it was to pick picked the most important pick – the next to last pick.  Because whoever was left was the last pick.  Whoever was left was the one who nobody really wanted.  If they had been wanted they would have been picked somewhere along the way.  As a matter of fact, often the team who picks last doesn’t even pick the last person!  The OTHER TEAM would often say, “OK, you guys have ______ (the remaining person).”

The ironic thing about Jesus is he most often picks the people nobody else would pick.  He did it with Moses, David, John the Baptist, the disciples, and so on.  God wins and glorifies His Holy Name, not by picking the superstars, not with the popular, not with the gifted, not with the ones who society looks up to, but by choosing and using the ones that seem to be nothing special and have nothing to offer.  If you see yourself as one that would be picked last, lift your head, Jesus is calling your name.  If there are others you or I look down on, you can bet that Jesus would pick them before He would pick us who look down on them.

Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. ~ Psalm 138:6

He has no use for conceited people, but shows favor to those who are humble. ~ Proverbs 3:34
