I loved something my brother wrote on Facebook after a particular four day weekend. He said he was ready to go back to work because without a job he wouldn’t ever realize what day it was. Last night I returned from 6 days in Nashville. In addition, it’s Martin Luther King, Jr. day so the banks, schools, post office, etc. are closed. And to top it off, I wasn’t able to attend church yesterday because I wasn’t leading the group I was with. So all week, I will be asking myself, “What is today? It seems like…..” You know what I’m talking about because it’s happened to you before.
God impressed upon my heart this morning that many of us have different commitments and responsibilities on different days while others of us have nothing to do nearly any day. Some days we wake up with burdens and concerns, other days we wake up without a care. Yet every day we wake up is a day the Lord has made. Psalm 118:24 says, ‘This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.’ We can do that because God made it and God is already in today. God already knows the decisions we will make and already knows what today holds for us.
So whatever day it is, it’s a day you were not guaranteed nor owed. It is a day the Lord has graciously added to your life. It’s a day that’s a fresh gift to you from the Almighty Creator of the universe. And because of that, no matter what this day holds or what day it is, it’s a day God willed us to have and for that reason we can rejoice and be glad in it.
‘Almighty, loving, creating, and sustaining God, Heavenly Father of us all, I thank you for this day you have made and have given as a gift to me to use as I choose. Help me to choose to rejoice, to love, to forgive, and in doing so, to glorify you. Help me to trust you and draw closer to you this special day. I ask this in the Name of Jesus – Amen.’
