Choose Your Weapon

Overnight last night Diane thought she saw something peculiar.  It was about 2 a.m. and she thought she saw a light shining in the window.  So she went around the house investigating.  I wasn’t too worried.  After a little while, I began to wonder if I should go see where she was.  Before I decided to take action, she re-entered the room.  Then in a few minutes she thought she saw something again.  This time it was going to require some action on my part.  I dutifully got up and went outside to see if there was anything going on or anyone prowling around the house.  I had two options for a ‘weapon’.  A metal snow shovel or a push broom.  I opted for the push broom.  While the snow shovel would certainly do more damage, it was heavy and would be difficult to swing.  After deciding for the lighter ‘weapon’ I then decided I would hold the broom end because I could be more ‘ninja-like’ with the stick end.  After seeing nothing and deducing that nobody had been in our yard because I could see mine were the only footprints left in the heavy frost on the grass, I went back inside and was sarcastically complimented about my intimidating ‘weapon’.

Upon reflection, it brings to mind Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”  If I had run across someone with a real weapon last night, I would have been in trouble.  When we try to fight the dark powers of this world on our own, we are in trouble.  If we keep reading in Ephesians, it tells us we need to be armed with truth, righteousness, faith, prayer, and the Spirit.  We don’t get these things out when we sense trouble.  By then it’s too late.  We keep them ready ‘on all occasions’ (Eph. 6:18) so we can ‘take (our) stand against the devil’s schemes’ (v. 11) and ‘extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one’ (v. 16).  Choose your weapons carefully.  With our own improvised defenses, we will be easily defeated by the evil one.
