Thursday is the National Day of Prayer in the United States. You can read about it on Wikipedia.
I can’t help but wonder if Jesus was physically walking on the earth today, and if He happened to be in the United States on Thursday, if He would attend a National Day of Prayer get together. If He did, I don’t think He would go to the one in Washington, DC. It’s too big and showy. Jesus was not so much about big and showy while He was here. He proved that by riding into Jerusalem on a lowly donkey instead of a stallion. I think if He did go to one on Thursday it would be in an out of the way church where very few attended the get together. As a matter of fact, He might even go when there was nobody else there so He could be by Himself with the Father, just as He was in the Garden of Gethsemane. Of course, this is all speculation. He’s pretty unpredictable and doesn’t think like us. You might say His ways are higher than our ways.
I don’t know where He’ll be this Thursday, but I know where He was last Thursday. Last Thursday He was at Johnson Memorial UMC in Huntington, WV. I know that because He asked a person in our group for a bigger piece of meat because He hadn’t eaten all day (you can read about it here). I also know where he was yesterday. He was in two places at once!!! My friend Shauna Hyde and some of her friends cleaned up under a bridge in the Charleston WV area where Jesus lives sometimes. And Mason Mayor Mindy Kearns was helping Him after a house fire. (You can read about it here.)
The more I get to know Jesus, the more I’m convinced that He’s not so impressed with or interested in the “in your face” big showy events we put on in His honor. He sort of likes the day in and day out faithfulness. I think He prefers the prayer when nobody is watching and you might not even feel like it. I think He loves it when we do things for Him and talk to Him when it’s not a special occasion. I’m sure He will not be opposed to you praying with the Nation on Thursday for the National day of Prayer, but He’d probably love it even more if you would pray, glorify, and serve Him today.
