Dragnet was a television show that was on when I was a kid. They took true police stories and did a show about them. At the beginning of the show it told the viewer that the story was true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Sometimes a name change is beneficial. Some people no longer introduce themselves as Christians because of the negative connotation in our society, but might call themselves ‘followers of Jesus’ instead. I remember Rev. Ben Wells, UMC campus pastor at Marshall University saying he was doing a brochure for campus fellowship and his wife said the word ‘fellowship’ would turn off the young non-Christians because it was a ‘churchy word’.
We’re calling our Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship this year, “Christmas in Short Gap”. People who are already coming will come no matter what we call it. People who don’t go to church might come to “Christmas in Short Gap” quicker than they would come to a Christmas Eve Church Service.
There’s something in a name.
