No school because of Labor Day

We have a neighbor who went away this weekend.  I know that because their car has been gone.  Last night I was befuddled as to why they were not home because I knew they had school today.  Even this morning, I was wondering what in the world was going on.  When you do not have kids at home, you are oblivious to the school schedule.  Early dismissals and two hour delays mean nothing to you.  I remember when our kids were young and I thought it was so funny that older people had never heard of Teletubbies.  Now I have someone tell me they are bringing a Ripboard to the yard sale and I have no clue what that is.  When you do not have school aged kids around, you do not think of things that people with kids around think about.  It finally struck me a few minutes ago that there is no school today because it is Labor Day.

You probably know the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind”.  I remember Mike Slaughter, former pastor at Ginghamsburg UMC outside of Dayton, OH saying that if he was not careful he could forget about God within 24 hours.  While every day is important to draw near to God, I think Monday is the most important day for me to focus on Him.  This morning I am in the midst of watching a 48 minute testimony from a guy who teaches at Vanderbilt University.  I will probably listen to a sermon online.  I will read the Bible.  I think I feel Mondays are so important because I have just come off of Sunday.  Monday would  seem like a justifiable day to skip time with Jesus.  And a holiday Monday would seem like a more appropriate day to “take off”.  Yet, I am reminded that while we call Sunday the Lord’s Day, so is Monday.  Labor Day is the Lord’s Day, too.  Every day is.  And I know what can happen if something or someone is out of sight for a while.

Father in Heaven, I lift up the Name of Jesus, my rock and my fortress, my Savior and my Redeemer.  Your Word says to draw near to You and You will draw near to me.  I thank you for loving me and for holding me close.  No matter what this day holds, I am thankful that I have You.  Today, I remember You.  Today, I remember what You have done for me on the cross.  Today, I remember Your forgiveness.  Today, I remember Your love.  Today, I remember Your faithfulness.  Today, I remember Your promise to be with me always.  And that is enough for today.  Thank You Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen.
