We’re all impacted by the cross

It has been over a month since my last blog post.  And typically my blog is taking an everyday thing and putting a Jesus spin on it.  Today it’s not cute, but rather a simple warning.

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” ~ Mark 8:34-45

The above Scripture is frequently discussed and preached from the perspective that we decide whether to pick up our cross.  I read a Bonhoeffer devotion this morning that put a new spin on it for me.  Bonhoeffer said all of humanity lives under the “death-sign of the cross”.  He implies that you either despise/ignore the cross, which leads to your destruction, or you accept the cross which leads to your salvation.  The way he explained it, it is almost as if each of us has no choice but to pick up our cross.  We can pick it up now, give up our life to Jesus and actually save our lives, or we can pick it up at the end of this life and hang on it ourselves (proverbially) at the judgement.  We are all marching toward life or marching toward death.  You can bow to Him now and be saved, or you can bow to Him in the end and be condemned.
