A Given

This morning Diane and I were getting ready for our day.  We were joking around as I was getting ready to go out the door.  Sometimes she acts like she does not want me to go (while other times I think she does).  This morning I told her if she had to choose between having me around or having coffee she would choose coffee.  She said I was a “given”.  When someone is a “given”, you do take them for granted.  We have been married for nearly 32 years, I know what she means.  She does not mean it in a bad way.  She just knows I am always around or always a phone call or text away.  And we know we are in this journey of life together.

This train of thought reminds me of the Scripture from Ruth 1:16: But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

As you go about your day today, I hope you will pause for a moment and consider God as more than a given.  His promise for His children is to be with them always – to go through this life together.  He never sees you as a given.  He sees you as fearfully and wonderfully made.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. ~ Psalm 139:14

Pause and rejoice for a moment, basking in His love.  Like Diane’s coffee will help her deal with me and the world today, seeing yourself in God’s eyes for a moment might help you deal with things that come up in your life today.  He will be a given today, but not in a bad way.
